Queen of Chess Premiered at Sundance

Queen of Chess, the documentary film about Judit Polgár, had its world premiere on January 27 at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, where it was welcomed with a standing ovation.

Directed by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Rory Kennedy, the film presented the story of Judit’s journey to the very top of international chess, demonstrating how talent, dedication, and equal opportunity can overcome long-standing barriers in a traditionally male-dominated field.

The documentary reflects core values of the Polgár Judit Chess Foundation: the belief that intellectual ability is not determined by gender, and that with the right educational environment, encouragement, and perseverance, young people can reach extraordinary heights.

Featuring rare archival footage and personal moments, Queen of Chess showed how Judit’s career reshaped perceptions in chess and continues to inspire new generations to think boldly, challenge limits, and pursue excellence both on and off the board.

Following its Sundance debut, the film was scheduled for global release on Netflix on February 6, extending its message of empowerment, learning, and equal opportunity to audiences around the world.
